The richest celebrities The amount of money some celebrities earn these days is ridiculous, with many earning more in a day than what most people earn in a year. According to Forbes however, Floyd Mayweather earned more per day than a lot of celebrities earn in a year, taking home a staggering $300 million in 2015. The second highest-paid celebrity on Forbes’ list, fellow boxer Manny Pacquiao, took home just over half of that, which is still more than enough to last many lifetimes. Successful celebrities who were never rich We often think fame and fortune go hand in hand, although this isn’t always the case, as a recent study shows. There are some on the list, like Charles Darwin, who were very wealthy indeed, while others, such as Jane Austen, made very little money from their great work â€" in the case of Jane Austen and many other successful people who have since died, she was nowhere near as successful in life as she would become in death, earning the majority of her fame and fortune in the centuries after her passing. Summary Sunday Conferences ROCK! Like a kid in a candy store, I wanted some of everything at this years Career Directors International conference, which brings together great minds in the resume writing world and careers industry. In the spirit of halloween, and doling out candy, I want to share some of the key takeaways from the conference! The Data The greater your level of education, the less impacted youve been by unemployment.really!   Dr. David E. Altig, Sr. Vice President and Director of Research for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, shared his presentation on the economy and jobs (or should I say unemployment). He also talked a bit about the skills gap that exists between what employers are looking for and what is available in the US talent pool. He referenced findings from ACTs Work Keys which you can read more about here. The Secrets Then there was Shally Steckerls presentation on Job Search Secrets from a Recruitment Sourcing Guru. I was lucky enough to sit with Shally during lunch as well and gain additional insights.   His advice for job seekerspost your resume on all the major job boards (Monster and CareerBuilder). If a company is paying for access to these job boards, they want to feel like they are getting their moneys worth, so theyll tend to look for candidates there first!   Easy and fast access! Indeed is now offering free resume uploads for job seekers too, according to Sophie Beaurpere, Director of Communications at Indeed.com. The Advice There was also a panel discussion.   Here are some of the points. According to Charles Purdy, Monster.coms survey, 58% of job seekers who landed jobs said networking was a component to their securing the job. Tony Lee of Adicios CareerCast highly advised job seekers to conduct more research during job search.   This proactive step will increase their chances of finding opportunities and interviewing better.   He also recommended setting up multiple alerts (via the job boards and other web-based tools) to stay on top of what is going on. Chandlee Bryan, of StartWire, encouraged job seekers to leverage this tool to track your job applications. As a driver of human decisions, it may not offer the illicit thrill of Freud’s unconscious sexual desires or the mathematical elegance of the economist’s incentives. Convenience is boring. But boring is not the same thing as trivial.  The Tyranny of Convenience Your smart phone is your external brain.   Or maybe it is a mini-You. It can recall useful information (Google search).   It can capture lifes important moments (pictures/video).   It works for dictating your thoughts (audio recorder).   It keeps you on schedule (alarm clock and calendar).   Its your social connection (phone, text, instant messaging, Facebook, Instagram).   If is your business rolodex (LinkedIn).   It is your phone/address book (phone contacts).   You use it to write letters (email).   It is your calculator.   You bank with it instead of going to the bank.   You track your finances with it for your personal life or business (Mint, Quickbooks, Quicken).   It is your go to source for entertainment and problem solving (YouTube). You name it, your phone does it. But what happens with all this convenience? Convenience often creates or subsidizes the monopoly. Were in an age of influencers.   The whole point of an influencer is they can guide your decision making without having to do the hard work of evaluating things. That is why even though people could spend a lot of time price shopping on Google, even in the store with their smartphone, people would still prefer the convenience of relying on other peoples suggestions rather than have to wade through pages and pages of reviews and comparisons online. They just want to decide and get on with the rest of their day. This is why, as Perry Marshall  (promoter of the 80/20 rule in marketing) says, were going from 80/20 to 90/10 on the internet.   10% of the businesses control 90% of the sales. You used to see this with Coke vs Pepsi (notice that Tab or RC Cola were not even in the discussion).   Or it is Starbucks vs ??? or iPhone vs Android.   Typically theres #1, #2 and no one else matters to the conversation. So I guess the question is, What are you giving up with all this convenience? People dont often wash their own cars.   They shop online at Amazon instead of going to the mall.   You go out to a restaurant and while theyre waiting for their dinner, time that typically was the time for conversation and connecting before eating, now youll see families where everyone is on a phone or tablet.   The mom gives the tablet to the toddler to keep him quiet. We also used to complain that kids wouldnt know how to do math in the real world because of calculators or if they got a job at the grocery store they wouldnt know how to count change because everything was scanned and payment electronic. Now Im not saying the past was better than today.   I enjoy much of this convenience myself. And when I go off into the mountains backpacking with my kids I really grasp the power that convenience has given us as I leave it behind and get outside cell coverage range and have to use things like a map and compass and not always have the cell phone in my hand. So the article I referenced wraps up with this challenge (notice I pulled from the original article so you wouldnt have to read it for your convenience). So let’s reflect on the tyranny of convenience, try more often to resist its stupefying power, and see what happens. We must never forget the joy of doing something slow and something difficult, the satisfaction of not doing what is easiest. The constellation of inconvenient choices may be all that stands between us and a life of total, efficient conformity.
